Mr. Totem: Guyle Fielder

Born in Potlatch, Idaho on November 21st, 1930, Guyle Fielder first played his junior hockey with the Prince Albert Mintos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League then with the Lethbridge Native Sons of the Western Canadian Junior Hockey League. He started his professional career with the New Westminster Royals of the Pacific Coast Hockey League where he won The Rookie Award for his 75 points in the 1951-52 season. In order to give a good indication of his talents, I think it would be appropriate to say that Fielder was the "Wayne Gretzky" of the Western League. In the 23 years he played in the WHL, Fielder scored 1,846 points* with various teams: Royals, Edmonton Flyers, Seattle Bombers, Americans, Totems, Salt Lake City Golden Eagles and Portland Buckaroos.

His most productive season was in 56-57 when Fielder scored 33 goals and added 89 assists for 122 points with the Americans; however, his best season as a Totem came in the 58-59 championship season when he scored 119 points with 24 goals and 95 assists. Fielder won the Leader Cup - Most Valuable Player in the WHL - six times, the Leading Scorer Award nine times, the Fred J. Hume Cup - Most Gentlemanly Player award - three times, and had 12 all-star mentions. (*1,929 points if one counts his only season in the American Hockey League. In the 1952-53 season he scored 83 points with the St. Louis Flyers. It's also interesting to note that in the 15 regular season and playoff games Fielder played in the NHL - with Chicago, Detroit, and Boston - he registered no points.)
